I became the ward councillor for Kingsfold in May 2011. Even I was surprised at the gap of my lead from the Conservatives of nearly 100 votes, about 20%. My fellow councillor in Kingsfold is Cllr. Jim Patten.
I moved to Preston in 2004 and within a few months moved to Bloomfield Grange. I currently work for LCC Highways and have worked on Lancashires roads from two weeks of moving here with various Traffic Management companies. My family are from Shetland and Barnes (London), my Dad was in the RAF when he met my Mum in Shetland. I have travelled all over the North West in my job and on visits, I always am taken aback my the friendliness of the folk and the all year beauty. I have always tried to help folk when I can, I think I get this from my Mum. My family have been part of the Labour Party for many years. My Grandfather in Shetland was a Labour voter from his time working on the docks and my Great Uncle was the Labour Mayor for Hammersmith and Fulham in the 70's. It was my Great Uncles stories of being involved with the party, his working with top Labour people as an entertainments manager and his care for people that made me think I could do something to help, even more so now we are being hammered left, right and centre. We are all "ConDemned" I am involved with the Penwortham Pumpkin Patch on Aspinal Close, a community garden, open to all. I am also a member Patients Board of the NHS Teaching Hospitals and work as a volunteer producing and presenting a four weekly radio show on Preston FM. My work as a councillor involves working with the officers of Penwortham Town Council. I attend as many of the committee meetings at Civic Centre as I can, this helps me keep my finger on the pulse of the council, as well as attending out Learning Hours. Although I have a HGV licence, I do not own a car. I cycle everywhere. I have cycled to all but two of all the meetings I have attended. I use my cycle to travel around the ward and this gives me time to look at the area in much closer detail. I try to report any defects with street lights, roads and signs as well as getting areas looked at due to dog fouling. I am a member of Unite Union, as well as being a Labour Party member I am a member of the Co Op Party. |
